crisis at this year's g-20 summit, one has overshadowed the rest. the civil war in syria. president obama will meet mete with the chinese president to discuss a way to ease bashar alassad out of power and end the violence that has gripped the country for more than a year. china and russia have resisted the idea and have been the two key obstacles to international intervention in syria. effectively using their veto power to block u.n. security council votes that would authorize any action. in a two-hour meeting yesterday, president obama and russian president vladimir putin agree that the violence has to end but offered no solution as to how that would happen, and they did not discuss the fate of syrian president assad, whose removal has been called the only way forward by america and many of its european allies. >> we discussed syria, where we agree that we need to see a cessation of the violence, that a political process has to be

created to prevent civil war and the kind of horrific deaths that we've seen over the last several weeks, and we pledge to work with other international actors, including the united nations and all interested parties in trying to find a resolution to this problem. >> the body language, by the way, between the two presidents, noticeably chilly, stiff. both leaders sitting back in their chairs, rarely making eye contact, not smiling, sharing only a terse handshake at the end. it was their first face to face meeting in three years, as chuck todd pointed out, it was a stark contrast to the relationship between president obama and putin's predecessor, often seen chatting and laughing together. that has been your body language analysis this morning on "way too early." the white house warned not to read too much into the men's relationship.
5:32 am
>> this isn't the first body language will have gate that we've had with the russians. president medvedev, who president obama has a great relationship with there was a similar report that there was this body language and must be a huge problem. these are business-like conversations between the united states goth and the russian government. so they're candid and business-like. that tends to be the demeanor of the russians. >> despite the white house claims, there was a noticeable change. putin and george w. bush often collegial towards each other. they went fishing together. none of that compares to president bush's declaration in 2001 that he looked putin in the eye and "was able to get a sense of his soul." while all was going on yesterday, there were reports

that russia has begun deploying warships in its naval base in syria. turn now to politics. the supreme court's ruling on arizona's controversial immigration laws expect to be handed dmo eed down in the next so. florida senator marco rubio believed to be on mitt romney's short list for vice president is now dropping his immigration plan after being up staged by the president on friday. president obama announced an order to stop deporting thousands of illegal immigrants brought to the united states as children. rubio's proposal would grant work visas to illegal immigrants brought into the country as children if they later served in the military or pursued an education. yesterday, rubio and mitt romney both suggesting that politics got in the way of a delicate situation. >> if you even suggest that you have an illegal immigration problem, if you're a republican, oftentimes the left will label you as anti-immigrant. this idea that this is a slam
5:34 am
dunk issue, that it's easy, is just not true. on the one hand, we do have a significant illegal immigration problem. it has to be confronted. it has to be solved. we cannot be the only country in the world that does not enforce its immigration laws. on the other hand, we have some very compelling stories. it feels weird to deport a valedictorian who's been here since 4 years old. what the president did by ignoring the constitution, ignoring the congress makes it harder to find that balance. not to mention that it's offensive to the constitutional principles of our republic. >> he went to work on obamacare and on cap and trade and on car check and he went after all the things that he and his liberal friends have been trying to do for years. he had talked about in a campaign, remember, he was all concerned about the deficit. he said he would cut the deficit in half. have you heard him talk about the deficit or balancing the budget in three and a half years? i haven't. he was going to deal with immigration, he said, in his first year, he was going to
5:35 am
focus on that. did he do anything on immigration while he had a democratic house and senate? no. this is a president who has said one thing and done another. i've got to tell you, we're going to have a very different course. because the path he's taken us on is a path towards europe. >> interesting note from the campaign yesterday. senator john kerry has been tapped to play the role of mitt romney in a series of mock debates to help president obama prepare for romney. david axelrod called kerry an obvious choice saying "there is no one who has more experience or understanding of the presidential debate process than john kerry." kerry apparently picked in part because of his knowledge of the state of massachusetts and an intimate knowledge of romney's record there. kerry is considered a skilled debater and helped ted kennedy defeat mitt romney in a massachusetts senate race in 1994. turning to egypt where a power struggle is under way just one day after the muslim brotherhood declared victory in this weekend's presidential

declare war, control the army, or replace its leaders. the reaction was this. >> people love mohammed morsi. >> a crowd of supporters in tahrir square. a movement began offering thanks in prayer, and opposing the military decree. this celebration has been a long time coming. for decades, the muslim brotherhood was banned in this country, its leaders arrested. but now the muslim brotherhood appears to have won egypt's presidentsy. it is a nightmare for this country's second lair military, an experiment in political islam that could now spread from here in tahrir square across the middle east. a prospect that frightens a tour operator passing through the square. >> for me, today, egypt has sent a bad message for all the world that we go back 100 years, 200 years. >> reporter: many other egyptians are equally nervous. >> i don't believe that is a
